Calendar of the Letters in the John Rippon Collection, British Library (1265 documents)
Four Volumes, Add. MS. 25386-89
Below is the first calendar ever attempted of the John Rippon Letters, a set of four folio bound volumes in the British Library. To date, only a few of the letters in this massive collection have been catalogued by the British Library, leaving the vast bulk of the collection largely inaccessible to scholars of Baptist history and the Baptist minister, John Rippon (1754-1836), who succeeded the famed John Gill (1697-1771) as pastor of the Baptist meeting at Carter Lane (and later Park Street), Southwark, serving from 1774 to his death in 1836. The four volumes in the Rippon Letters in the British Library are letters written to Rippon (less than five letters by Rippon are included in these volumes) by ministers and lay persons (and numerous women) from within his own church, in London and the surrounding locales, across Great Britain, and from America and various foreign countries, primarily locations where Baptist missionaries were working after 1793. It may well be the largest set of Baptist letters from this period to survive, certainly rivalling the BMS collection of letters now residing in the Angus Library and far surpassing the Baptist letters belonging to the collections of the Rylands Library in Manchester and the two Isaac Mann Collections, one at the National Library of Wales and the other at the Beinecke Library, Yale. Included in the Rippon Letters are letters by a number of Baptist ministers which have only survived in these volumes. As more work in done on each individual letter, a more accurate calendar will emerge, with more names and dates added that are now unknown with certainty.
Letters highlighted in yellow have been transcribed and can be found in other locations on this website by clicking on the letter.
