Henry Crabb Robinson, 30 Russell Square, London, to Lord [Henry] Brougham, [no address], 30 October 1845.
30 Russell Square
30th Oct: 1845
My Lord –
I had great pleasure in reading the few lines with which your Lordship favord me. I rejoiced in having my own strong convictions so corroborated –
I mean to take the chance of finding you at home and at leisure between 11 & 12 very soon in order to shew you the letter of apology of which you have heard but of which I am sure you can have no idea – It is signed by the two brothers: And under the mask of a really humble apology is a studied insult; but our good old friend did not see through it, And has written them a letter of which they will not fail to make use, whenever they may have an end to answer. He declares his perfect satisfaction with them: And would concur in their canonization were he called upon –
I had not overlooked the article in the Quarterly I was glad to read variations of an opinion strongly expressed by me in my defence of Clarkson and myself – I care not that my writing should be forgotten, provided the Sentiment be universally spread
I am
my Lord
faithfully your’s
H. C. Robinson
