William Babington (1756-1833) studied medicine at Guy’s Hospital, London, in the 1770s, but did not take a degree. After working as an apothecary, he finally earned an M.D. from Aberdeen in 1795. He promptly obtained a position at Guy’s Hospital, where he practiced medicine until 1811, after which he was primarily associated with the College of Physicians. He was instrumental in the formation of the Geological Society in 1807 and was eventually elected a fellow of the Royal Society.
