Andrew Fuller, Edinburgh, to Mrs. Fuller, Kettering, 18 October 1808.
Edino 18. Oct. 1808
My dear Love,
You will not think much of the postage of a Letter tho’ it comes so soon after the other. I wrote yesterday inclosing a bill of 350£ To day I add another of 250£ It is truly astonishing to see the effects produced by the Memoir, of wch Dr S. had printed a new Edition of a 1000 before I arrived. I doubt not but I shall take as much out of Edino as I bro’t into it, after having sent you 600£ of its benevolences. Mr Jas Haldane, with whom I have had 2 or 3 debates, but all in vain, gave me their Collection yesterday, wch was 200£ -- Nearly 100£ more was collected on Lds day eveng at Mr Aikman’s Tabernacle – 40£ the same day at Mr Anderson’s – This Evening I preach for a Mr Lothian a Burgher Seceder. There are 3 places of this denomination in Edino. I have Collected at two of them – the other refused, because the Session (say the deacons) were unwilling but I am told they are now on the start of repentance, for that the people of all are for denominations are for the object, & their own people cry out agst them as having done wrong, & threaten to depose them & lodge the power in the ministers hand, who was willing.
To morrow morning I go for the North – My plan is a little altered Weds Oct 19. Reach Perth; Thursday Dundee; Lords day at Aberdeen; Tuesday at Kirkaldy; Weds at Inverkiethring & Dunfermline – Thursday (27th) go to Glasgow. There I will hope to find a Letter from my dearest. On that day week, (Thursday Nov 3) I leave Glasgow for Paisly; on Friday be at Greenock – On Saturday go to Kilwinning where & at Irvine I shall spend Lds day Nov. 6 Then on Monday set off for home, only stopping a day or so at Leeds. May the Lord give me strength for the work. Think upon me O my God for good.
I am concerned for my dr bror Sutcliff’s heavy affliction: but Dr S[tuart] says It is the way in wch colds taken in Sepr & Octr commonly work. I hope he will be with you next Lds day. The love of this whole family awaits him. I think my visit has raised their spirits. The Doctor has been so blessedly busy he has had no time to pore over other things. He fears however his depression will return when I am gone. I feel a good deal better than I was last Friday. Whither I shall get time to say any more I know not – If not accept my best love & present it to Mother [&] to the children, & to all our dear friends. Several kind inquiries after Mrs Wallis, particularly from Dr S., Mr Anderson, & Mrs Hamilton.
Ever yrs A. Fuller
