William Carey, [Serampore], to [John Rippon, London], undated [c. autumn 1800, just after the death of John Fountain].
I send this by Dr Barron – American Gentleman who has practised Physick several years at Calcutta. He is going to England Surgeon of the Georgiana Packet, and I believe. Hopes to get an appointment from the Court of Directors – I wish he may succeed – he is not a religious Character, but is a very amiable and deserving Man. – He has been at our House at Serampore – and perhaps will call again before he sails to Europe. I don’t think he can tell much about the state of the Mission – except so far as common report goes.
Bror Fountain when on his Death Bed desired me to see to your being paid for the Books sent out to him which by the Bill sent to him I see amounts to £9.9. I enclose an order upon the Society for the Amount – You did not say what was the Amount of the Books sent to me – be what it will I will write to Bror Fuller, or rather enclose an Order to him, to [pay] off the whole.
