Lady Anne Isabella Byron, Brighton, to Henry Crabb Robinson, [30 Russell Square, London], 17 June 1855.
[f. 132r]
June 17th 1855
Memd of Agreement between Lt Arnold & myself.
From Augst 15. 1854 he was to undertake the education of my Grandson. Salary £400 per ann: out of which he was to pay certain charges for instruction – It was stipulated by me that if, for any reason whatsoever I should terminate that Engagement within the period of two years the whole sum of £800 which would have been due for that term, if completed, should be paid. In Decr 1854 (within 6 months) [f. 132v] Lt Arnold informed me of his intention to resign the charge in June 1855.
In consequence I determined to close the engagement at once in order to form other arrangements, & it appeared to me the proper course to pay at the same time the £200 for the next half year, as I had declined Mr A’s assistance during that period when he was willing to have afforded it.
It remains for him to show why he refuses to accept more than one quarter £100.
The first payment £200 was made Augst 1854 – (in [f. 133r] advance)
The second would have been due Feby 1855 & has been sent to Lt A.’s Banker He has returned £100 to my Banker.
