Gurney and Hawes Families 

Thomas Gurney (1705-1770) married Martha Marson in 1730.

I.     Martha Gurney (1733-1816) never married.

II.    Joseph Gurney (1744-1815) married Rebecca Brodie (1747-1814) on 7 April 1766.  They had ten children, only three survived into adulthood (seven died between 1769 and 1790).

a.   John Gurney (1768-1845) married Maria Hawes (1768-1849) on 11 December 1797. They had seven children:

1. Maria (27 April 1798-1863) married Robert Ware.

2. Harriet (1800-1874) married John Edward Fordham of Royston.

3. John Hampden (1802-62) (Rev.) married Maria Grey.

4. Russell Gurney (1804-78) (Rt. Hon.) married Emilia Batten.

5. Louisa (1805-33) married the Revd William Start.

6. Sidney (1807-1875) married Louise Elizabeth Watson.

7. Sophia (1836-?) married the Revd George Lea.

b.    Elizabeth Gurney (1770-1840) never married.

c.    William Brodie Gurney (1777-1855) married Ann Benham (1780-1827)

3. Mary Ann (1812-71) married William Kingsbury Jameson.

4. Emma (1815-93) married the Revd William Augustus Salter.

5. Caroline (1816-55) married John James Smith.

7. Amelia (1820-93) married the Revd Joseph Angus, minister at Park Street in Southwark and Secretary of the Baptist Missionary Society and Principal of Regent's Park College.

8. Mary (1823-59) later the Revd Henry Grey and the Revd T. L. Kingsbury.

William Hawes  (1736-1808) married Sarah Fox (d. 1815) [She was the sister of William Fox, the political writer associated with Martha Gurney)

I. Sophia Hawes (1761-1828) married Russell Scott (1760-1834) of Milborne Port, Somerset.

II. Harriet Hawes (1764?-1822) never married.

III. Maria Hawes (1768-1849) married John Gurney (1768-1845).

IV. Benjamin Hawes (1770-1860) married Ann Feltham (d. 1847) [She was the sister of John Feltham, at one time the fiance of Eliza Gould]
