Miscellaneous C. H. Spurgeon materials.
One letter from Clapham, 16 March 1867, to unknown correspondent, noting his appreciation for receiving a facsimile of a John Wesley letter. Also two newspaper clippings, one from a visit to Liverpool courtesy of the Rev. H. S. Brown, whose Baptist chapel at Myrtle-street was re-opening (no date, but c. 1874); and another clipping from the 22 May 1879 issue of the London Daily News about Spurgeon’s 25th anniversary ceremonial dinner. The article is quite a good appraisal of Spurgeon and his speaking powers, comparing him with Bright and Newman. The writer says, “No one would attempt to give any sketch, however slight, of the religious life of England at the present time without some description and estimate of Mr. Spurgeon. In our opinion no account either of English oratory or of English humour would be complete if it excluded Mr. Spurgeon’s speeches and Mr. Spurgeon’s jokes.”
